Oncoplastic Breast Surgery: Median 36-Month Follow Up Results.

Introduction

Over the last decades, oncoplastic breast surgery (OPBS) for breast cancer is considered as safe and effective procedure and gaining overall acceptability, satisfaction & QoL. OPBS became standard of care for selected breast cancer.

Methods

After performing 58 OPBS for breast cancer in the period of September 2021 to February 2022 in National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital (NICRH) patients were followed up as per schedule up to September 2024 having median follow up time 36 months to see the outcomes set in objectives. Here we observe the outcome of OPBS in term of cosmesis, quality of life, recurrence, 36-month disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).

Results

In cosmesis 68% patients have excellent and 32% have good result. In QoL 76% had highly satisfied and 34 % had satisfied in body image, 20% have more fear for recurrence, 84% patients were highly satisfied with treatment and 80% patients had highly satisfied and 20% had satisfied with cosmetic results. Only 2(3.4%), 1(1.7%), and 2(3.4%) patients developed local, regional (axillary) and local plus distal recurrence respectively and 3-year DSF & OS is 91.4% & 96.6% respectively.

Conclusion

OPBS for surgical management of breast cancer in Bangladesh perspective showed satisfactory results in 36 months follow up. Further follow up is warranted to validate the current results.
