Introduction

Background : Recurrent breast carcinoma can occur with different clinical presentation with different demographic characteristics. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to assess clinico-demographic characteristics of CA 15-3 biomarker positive recurrent breast carcinoma patients.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Surgery & Department of Radiotherapy, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh and Department of Surgical Oncology at National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh, from December 2021 to June 2022 for a period of seven (07) months. All the women who presented with recurrent breast carcinoma with the age group of 18 years or above were selected as study population. Variables analyzed include patient’s age, type of surgery done during primary treatment, CA 15-3 level during follow up, mode of recurrence, contraceptive history, menstrual history and family history. Serum CA 15-3 was measured by ELISA method. CA 15-3 concentrations were stratified using a cut off value of 30 U/mL.

Results

A total number of 51 patients were recruited for this study after fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The mean age was found 48.3±9.6 years. The percentage of premenopausal and postmenopausal patients was 58.0% cases and 42.0% cases respectively. Invasive ductal carcinoma was in 92.0% patients and invasive lobular carcinoma detected in 8.0% patients. Nature of recurrence revealed that 30.0% cases were local recurrence, 26.0% locoregional recurrence and 14.0% were chest wall recurrence. Type of previous surgery was Modified Radical Mastectomy in 34.0% subjects and Lumpectomy in 32.0% subjects. Total 11(22.0%) patients had family history of breast cancer but 78.0% patients had no family history of breast cancer. Use of OCP reported 43(86.0%) patients.

Conclusion

In conclusion most of the recurrent breast cancer patients are in the middle age, premenopausal women who presented with invasive ductal carcinoma.
