OPBS became standard of care for selected breast cancer. Objective of this study was to assess the outcome of OPBS in terms of cosmesis, quality of life, recurrence, 60-month disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).
Methods
After performing 58 OPBS for breast cancer in the period of September 2021 to February 2022 in National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital (NICRH) patients were followed up as per schedule up to September 2026 having median follow up time 60 months to see the outcomes set in objectives.
Results
In cosmesis 68% of patients have excellent and 32% have good results. In QoL 76% were highly satisfied and 34 % had satisfied in body image, 20% had more fear for recurrence, 84% patients were highly satisfied with treatment, and 80% patients were highly satisfied and 20% satisfied with cosmetic results. Only 2(3.4%), 1(1.7%), and 2(3.4%) patients developed local, regional (axillary) and local plus distal recurrence respectively and 5-year DSF & OS is 91.4% & 96.6% respectively.
Conclusion
OPBS for surgical management of breast cancer in Bangladesh perspective showed satisfactory results in 60 months follow up that is comparable to other international studies of its kind. Further follow-up is warranted to validate the current results.
